Hakone (箱根) is a great place for an easy day trip from Tokyo, being just an hour 40 minutes away. Hakone has a lot to offer – onsen, lakes, forests, unique museums and the vicinity to Mount Fuji makes it a popular place among the Japanese and foreigners. Gotemba Premium Outlet is located in Shizuoka Prefecture, 1.5 hours away from Tokyo by either bus or train. If you are in the Hakone area, Gotemba Premium Outlet is also a favorite destination for shopping just an hour away. We went to the outlet by bus – thinking that it might be a bit difficult to find the Odakyu Line “Romance Car” in the vast Shinjuku West Station. Lake Ashi (芦ノ湖) is a gorgeous lake with Mount Fuji as a backdrop. When the weather is right, the snow-capped Mount Fuji, bright red torii gate, glowing pirate ships on glistening waters make it absolutely bewitching.
It is smoking at Owakudani, Hakone. Owakudani (大涌谷) literally means “boiling valley”and there’s no other name more suitable than that because the whole place is indeed an active volcanic zone with bubbling hot onsen and overwhelming pungent sulfuric fumes. Continue reading
