This 9 Days Self-Drive New Zealand itinerary covers attractions, places to eat and accommodation in the glacier regions of West Coast, Wanaka, Mount Cook and Mackenzie. A lot of driving was involved in our fantastic road trip but we didn’t mind one bit because the sceneries were so stunning along the way. Continue reading
Capriccio Bar and Restaurant is on the main street of Wanaka Town (Ardmore Street), but it is not as visible as it hides a little on the second floor of the Wanaka Shopping Center. We were lured in by the “seafood” signboard, hoping that we can get some Bluff oysters that is unique to New Zealand. We were in luck as the Bluff oysters were on the menu! The size of the oysters is bite-sized, and just the right size for slurping! The texture is creamy with a sweet smell of the sea. The texture is so soft and smooth everything just melts in your mouth.

Stonegrill is a fun and healthy way of eating. The food is served raw on a hot volcanic stone where it will take a few minutes to cook, and it is healthy because there’s no oil used at all.

We were super excited to take our lunch at Kohan Japanese Restaurant, Lake Tekapo, after seeing the kind of environment the alpine salmon are reared at Mount Cook Alpine Salmon Farm. Kohan, or 湖畔, literally means “by the lake” and indeed the the restaurant has ceiling-to-floor windows for superb view of Lake Tekapo.
Gary and I both took the Kohan Bento Box (NZD23.50).

Tailor-Made-Backpackers is a well maintained hostel. The double room with en suite bathroom we took was more like motel accommodation rather than a hostel. At only NZD80 per night, I thought was a good steal. Our room is an individual cottage, sort of looks like the one in the picture below but of a smaller size. The picture below is the main building that houses the reception, the kitchen and the common area.

We drove up the winding path to Mount John to visit the observatory during the day. The path is open to the public during the day but has controlled access at night. The panoramic view of the southern alps, the lakes and the Mackenzie basin is spectacular. Continue reading
Lake Tekapo is well known for its turquoise blue waters. The Church of the Good Shepherd by the lakeside with southern alps as a backdrop makes it an iconic scene of Lake Tekapo. Continue reading
On the way to Mount Cook Alpine Salmon Farm (located in between Tekapo and Twizel), we passed by Lake Pukaki. All I can say that New Zealand is full of beautiful landscapes and lakes. Continue reading
Kea Point Walk on Mount Cook is an easy walk on flat terrains. It’s really more of a leisure walk where you can play with snowman, or have fun planking!
