Tea Bones Cafe @ Ipoh (Hugh Low Street)

When I first drove past the Tea Bones Cafe on Hugh Low Street, I thought it was “T Bones” and immediately linked it to a steak house.  When I walked into the cafe, it was very oriental with a strong scent of Chinese herbs,  and obviously no sizzling steak is going to be served.  It was till I saw the menu with bak kut teh, drunken chicken, I realized it is “Tea Bones” and it is a literal translation from the two very crucial ingredients of tea  (“teh”) and bones (“kut”).  Continue reading

34 Cafes to Visit in Ipoh

The cafe scene in Ipoh is more vibrant than ever, with all sorts of new boutique cafes or hipster cafes popping out so fast that it’s hard to keep track.  In the beginning of 2012, there were barely 10 cafes in Ipoh to do a Top 10 List and now at the beginning of 2014, there are more than 30 cafes to sample.  The cafes never fail to amaze me with their individualistic, sometimes themed interior decoration such as Parisian, child’s play, Korean, nostalgia, vintage and heritage.  Some cafes have amusingly incorporated spa, hair saloon, DIY classes, ukulele lessons, art gallery, custom bikes or politics, serving more than just coffee and cakes.   Continue reading

Bread Espresso Dessert Cafe (BED) @ Ipoh

The BED Cafe, short for Bread, Espresso, Dessert, is quite a cute and unusual name for a cafe.  I can imagine a bar or night club called “Bed”, and I think I remember seeing a night club somewhere on the internet which uses big beds for seating instead of the conventional tables and chairs.   If you hear a Ipohrian say “Let’s go to BED” – that probably isn’t as naughty as it may sound.     Continue reading
