I have always enjoyed food from small towns in Malaysia, for every town has its own flavors and unique dishes. Sungai Lembing in Pahang is no different. In this list of “Top 10 Things to Eat @ Sungai Lembing”, you’ll see a lot of food here being made with “mountain-water”, which is very characteristic of Sungai Lembing because the villagers make their own pipe connections to the mountain to obtain the water from there.
Furthermore, modernization hasn’t taken over this town and lucky for us, all the food here are all still being made by hand and many food stalls still use charcoal to cook.
If you ever get a chance to visit Sungai Lembing, you must try all these foods !
1. Sungai Lembing Egg Chee Cheong Fun (林明蛋香猪肠粉)
An elderly couple manages this small store that’s opposite the hawker food centre. The chee cheong fun is atypical with the addition of eggs and spring onions. The texture is chewier and slightly starchier than the ones that we are used to. The best part is that it’s made fresh as you order; although that’s also precisely the reason that people have to wait for ages to get their hands on this scrumptious chee cheong fun. We didn’t have to wait as we were the first ones there at 6.40 am in the morning for breakfast, before heading to the rainbow waterfall.
2. Lembing Noodles.
You’ll never find this kind of noodles anywhere else in Malaysia because it is hand made using mountain water, and cooked over charcoal fire in a shoplot near one of the hanging bridges. The supplier supplies noodles to all the hawkers in Sungai Lembing, so it doesn’t really matter which food stall you eat it from because it’s all the same.
If you wish, you could even track down right to the source of manufacturing and “tapau” back in bulk.
3. Water Mountain Tofufa
The same store above also sells silken tofufa, made by incorporating Sungai Lembing’s favorite ingredient – the mountain water. If you can make noodles out of mountain water, hey, why not experiment with tofufa too ! The tofufa is not too commonly see on the main street of Sungai Lembing. You can find it in the store shown above, the store next to it, and at the Sunday Market.
4. Ah Ding’s Charcoal Roast Pork (林明阿定柴香烧肉)
Ah Ding’s Charcoal Roast Pork is roasted in a traditional brick kiln by using charcoal. Some call it the best roast pork in Malaysia because it’s got the addictive, crackling crunch and seriously, who roasts such a big slab of pork by charcoal these days ? It is located in Kampung Jeram Takar, and opens on Fridays and Saturdays from 5.30 pm onwards. For Sundays, it has a stall at the Sunday market from 6.30 am onwards. Be there early, because the pork sells out fast, not only to tourists, but the locals themselves are loving it. Do see the YouTube Video below.

5. Sister Fong’s “Mountain-Water” Tofu (阿鳳麵檔山水豆腐)
There are many places in Sungai Lembing that sell tofu made by using mountain water. Sister Fong’s in the hawker food center is the most famous, popularised by the TV Show “Ah Xian’s Food Journey”. The tofu is unbelievably soft and silky, while the slightly charred scent gives it an exquisite taste.
6. Tomato Noodles (番茄麵)
The tomato noodles is a popular dish in Sungai Lembing, and again you will see it at various stores. We tried these noodles from two places – Sister Purple’s Noodle Stall (紫姐麵檔) in the hawker food center, and a no name shop nearby the center. It’s basically Lembing Noodles stir fried with egg-drop tomato soup, char siew, fish cakes and vegetables. We like Sister Purple’s version better because it has an intense “wok-hei” flavor.
6. Mountain Water Bak Kut Teh @ Sungai Lembing Mining Restaurant (礦城山水肉骨茶)
The uncle here told me that “our water is not government water”. I was rather amused by his way of rephrasing “mountain water !”. The uncle definitely follows rules strictly because we were there at 5.50pm, and he told us to wait until 6 pm because that’s when the store opens. Anyway, the broth is a perfect balance between lightness, and a pleasurable amount of herb flavor.
7. Hand-Made Duck Egg Noodles (手工鴨蛋麵)
This is a shop with no name that’s just opposite the hawker food center; it simply has the word “tea” (茶) as a signage. The noodles are home made with duck eggs and immediately you would know it’s home made because you simply don’t get noodles with this chewy texture anywhere else. As for other elements in the noodles, the yummy pork balls and super-tender pork belly are just as perfect as the noodles.
8. Organic Durian
The store owner from the duck egg noodle shop above also happens to own an organic durian farm. If durians are in season, that’s definitely worth a try !
9. Coconut Biscuits (椰餅)
The Coconut Biscuits are popular in Sungai Lembing; some are made in Sunagi Lembing and some made in Kuantan. We chose the one with the hanging bridge on the cover because I think there is a little more story to it – it’s actually home made in a small shoplot right next to the Sungai Lembing hanging bridge. The biscuits have a light scent of roasted coconut; they are porous, crunchy and I feel less guilty eating them because the biscuits are surprisingly not sweet at all. There are no specific places to buy this because many stores on the main street would have this.
10. ‘”Dan San”(蛋散)
This is another snack that you will see on the streets of Sungai Lembing. It’s quite similar to “sak kei ma”, but without the stickiness. Grab a few extras because they can be really addictive !
