The new Little Elephant Cafe in Ipoh might have gotten you wondering about its food. At first I thought it’s a Thai restaurant because I generally associate elephants with Thailand. After giving it try, it is in fact a fabulous mix of Asian-fusion and western food. You’ll see a little bit of Thai-inspired, Japanese-inspired, and of course our favorite Malaysian food.
The cafe’s interior is a bit of fusion too. It uses a lot wood elements, giving the cafe a bit of a ‘kampung-feel”. At the same time, the cafe exudes a vintage aura with the old posters and the stained glass.
I like the creative uses of these big wheels, as chandeliers and as decorative elements on doors and windows.
The Thai Pomelo Salad (RM 16) is a good dish that we started with. The pomelo is refreshingly sweet with a dash of chili powder, while the cashew nuts add texture.
We like the Soft Shell Crab Pasta (a lot !) (RM 24), because it takes us by surprise as the creamy pasta is actually laced with salted egg yolk, not to mention that it goes amazingly well with the deep-fried, crispy soft shell crab.
The Nasi Kerabu Ayam Percik (RM 22) is extremely photogenic with its blue rice, which is the result of cooking it with butterfly-pea flowers. The ayam percik is wonderfully flavored with accents of chili and lemongrass, while the crackers, sourish pickles and salted egg make everything marvellous on this plate.
The Lemongrass Chicken Chop (RM 22) is without doubt a crowd-pleaser. The flavor of lemongrass immediately pops because you’ll find this prominent flavor in both the chicken and the sauce, thoroughly infused.
The Pineapple Fried Rice (RM 22) is a beautiful medley of prawns, squid rings, pineapple, cashew nuts and meat floss.
The Assam Laksa (RM 18) is flawlessly executed, but I would have preferred it with more flavors of assam.
If you are looking for sharing platters and snacks, try the Mixed Grill (RM 48), which is a generous portion for 3-4 pax, consisting of beef, chicken, lamb, sausages, potato wedges and vegetables.
The Garlic Butter Chicken Wings (RM 16) is another option for some crackling goodness.
Desserts are taken seriously at the Little Elephant. The Sago Gula Melaka (RM 8) is divine with a concoction of gula Melaka (sourced from Melaka), chewy sago and fresh coconut milk.
In this hot weather, a big mug of home-made Ipoh Cendol (RM 10) in crushed ice is the way to go !
The Sea Salt Caramel Coconut Ice Crem (RM 13) is suitable for sharing because of its substantial portion. You won’t regret ordering this velvety coconut ice cream, sprinkled with toasted coconut flakes and a drizzle of sea salt caramel.
The Little Elephant Cafe also has two other sections for seating, such as the private room that seats up to 18 pax,
and also the pavilions that are located outdoors.
The cafe is located along the main road of Jalan Raja Dihilir, just across from Pantai Hospital, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to spot 🙂
** With many thanks to the team at the Little Elephant Cafe for making this post possible.
