Cafe hopping remains as one of Malaysians’ favorite past-time activities – just look at the numbers of cafes that are increasing day by day and the number of instagram posts related to cafes, and you would understand. I’ve decided to pick Damansara Uptown and explore the cafes in this area.
You’ll find pretty much everything here . The cafes in Damansara Uptown can be categorised as follows : Korean cafes, Japanese cafes, tea cafes, ice cream cafes, dessert cafes, cafes with strength in food, cafes with strength in coffee, cafes high on creativity in food, cafes with more basic items but much more affordable than other cafes and lastly organic / vegetarian cafes. You’ll need a lot of time to visit all the cafes. Use this Cafe Guide to Damansara Uptown and Happy Cafe Hopping !
Check out my collage of photos on YouTube before you start !
1. A Pie Thing
Pies, pies, pies. It’s all about pies at A Pie Thing – both savory and sweet. Have your pie as is, or eat the “Mashacre” (RM 17.90) which is topped with mashed potatoes, peas and gravy. Savory pies include chicken mushroom, chunky steak, cheesy chicken and Thai green curry chicken. Try the pulled lamb, superbly tender in scrumptious gravy. Sweet pies include the Elvis, peanut butter brownie, lemon curd, apple crumble and Nutella (RM 10.50 – 15.50). I do love the cheese + salted caramel pie; where equal portions of both creamy elements intertwine with each other as you dig in, while crunchy almonds add a playful texture.

2. Ampersand by Culinary Rebels
Expect fabulous desserts at Ampersand by Culinary Rebels. The AMPS Indulgence (RM 18) has a small piece of rich, Valrhona chocolate brownie (one cm bigger it would have been too rich and too much), a moist mini white chocolate fudge cake, a peculiar combo of sesame + a balanced freshness of strawberries, blueberries and lemon curd. As for the mains (RM 28 to RM 38 for 2 pax portion), the Amps Buka is promising with the exotic flavors of Balinese spicy sauce and wonderful sous vide eggs, though the portions is small.

3. Beans & Beans Korean Cafe
You are right to assume that if it’s a Korean cafe, it has bingsu. Other than bingsu (RM 15.80 – RM 16.80), I am also happy to see at this latest Korean cafe offering more Korean snacks such as Spicy Gochujang Tuna Sandwich (RM 12.80) and Chicken Bulgogi Sandwich (RM 14.50). The red bean cheese toast (RM 15) is slightly queer at first but nonetheless a new flavor to try.

4. Bingsu Café
Well, the name says it. If you are looking for bingsu, you’ll definitely satisfy your bingsu crave here. The Green Tea Bingsu (RM 20.90) is a spectacular ensemble with lots of green tea love. Bingsu Cafe has also incorporated mango with Malaysians’ favorite flavor – the durian, and voila, the Durian Bingsu (RM 19.90) tastes superbly good with the fluffy shaved ice ! Other flavors include strawberry, black sesame, blueberry cheese and more (RM13.90 – RM20.90). Korean snacks and waffles are available as well (RM 14.90 – RM24.90).

5. BMS Organics
At BMS Organics, foods are fabulous with the use of plenty of vegetables. Take a look at the Five Colors Energy Chinese Ulam Rice (Hakka Lei CHa, RM 21.90); the colors alone are enough to whet your appetite. Traditional Malaysian food are found here, such as pan mee (RM8.90), claypot curry (RM23.90), nasi lemak (RM23.90), bak kut teh (RM20.90) and curry laksa (RM23.90), but all with a healthy vegetarian twist.

6. Cottle Coffee
Grab a cuppa at Cottle Coffee, who has been roasting coffee in Melbourne since 1962. Look no further if you are looking for good coffee. And yay they have decaf because not every café have this on the menu. Food at the moment is limited to pies, sandwiches and salads. The chicken leek pie is rather average, but the pumpkin salad that came with it is awesome – a hearty combo of pumpkins, quinoa, dried cherries and chick peas with a hint of cumin.

7. Dal Komm
The most eye-catching piece in Dal Komm would definitely be its bingsu (RM 23. 90 – RM 28.90). The delectable chocolate bingsu needs 2-4 pax to chow down this giant, consisting of nutty chocolate shaved ice, topped with lava cake, magnum ice cream and cream. Other flavors include Lemon Dazzling Bingsu, Grapefruit Bingsu and Apple Crumble Bingsu. The Cruffins are worth a try too – fluffy and flaky (RM 15.90 – RM 17.90). If you are a big fan of the latest Korean drama – Descendants of the Sun, you might notice that some of the scenes in are shot in Dal Komm in Korea.

8. Departure Lounge
Just look at the wall full of awards and accolades; you would know that Departure Lounge’s strength would irrefutably be its coffee. Try the baristas creations such as Morton, Peach Paradise and Emotion, which are exotic coffee and fruit juice infusions. The Peach Paradise comes with ristretto and peach – take a few sips without stirring and you’ll taste a gradient of flavors, from light bitterness of the coffee to the sweetness of the peach that eventually marry as one wholesome flavor. The Chicken Roulade (RM23.90) is homey with charred chicken skin, and well balanced with spinach, melted cheese and turkey bacon. Other items on the menu include breakfast, pasta and sandwiches (RM 4.90 – 23.90).

Epicuro has a good selection of pastas (RM22.90 – 25.90), brunch (RM17.90 -25.90), sandwiches (RM15.90 – 16.90), salads & soups (RM12.90 – 19.90), and desserts (RM10.90 – 14.90). The strength of the cafe is in its food; but that’s not the point. The even more important point is that it has BACON and PORK ! Conchiglie with spinach cream (RM22.90) is delectable, being lighter than a standard carbonara with a hint of freshness and a dash of bacon bits. Only slightly disappointed that the bacon bits were not as much as seen in the menu picture.

10. Every Sundae by Cielo Dolce
The whimsical outlet definitely wants you to treat every day as Sunday with both the interior decoration and carefree ice cream. The Golden Lava (RM16) sports an amazing salted egg yolk ice cream thats’s peculiarly sweet yet intriguingly savory, and it pairs well with crunchy pop corns. The Sweet Day (RM 18) consists of a salted caramel base flavor, topped with crispy golden honey combs and dreamy cotton candy held in black charcoal cone. Both combos are delightful and undeniably create a wow effect when you see them, but they were both too sweet for me.

11. Fat Spoon
The lengthy mirror at Fat Spoon is not the only thing that reminisces an era bygone; the dishes too are classic Malaysian dishes with a twist. The Tamarind Prawn Angel Hair Pasta (RM 18) is a fine example with slender pasta coated in tangy tamarind sauce, topped with prawns. The Ulum Fried Rice served with pappadum & fried chicken (RM 13) is irresistible, thanks to the inherent aroma of ulum. Prices are reasonable ranging from RM 13 to RM 18.

12. Frisson Coffee Bar
Go Instagram crazy at Frisson Coffee Bar because I think food is created for that purpose ! From stacked Snickerlicious Pancakes oozing with chocolate sauce to P. TripleB French Toast (RM 18.90) with sinful ingredients (beef bacon, peanut butter, banana), the food simply says “Instagram Me!” Now that your phone / camera / DSLR has eaten already, you may dig in.

13. Hail’s Soft Serve
Hail’s signature flavor is the pink peppercorn, which is no doubt a unique flavor to showcase with a dash of pink. It is first peppery, making the ice cream almost savory; which then ends on a minty aftertaste. It is intriguing because two unlikely tastes that seem unlikely to be ever found together, have crossed their paths in this unique berry that is not a true peppercorn, but has “peppercorn” in its name. At Hail’s, you would choose a base ice cream flavor from pink pepperporn, roasted teh tarik and twist, then choose pre-set toppings or toppings of your choice. The pink peppercorn goes well with the Mister Choco (RM 16), while the roasted teh tarik is an interesting mix with J-Pop (RM 17). Other gourmet desserts such as Brown Rice Hotcakes and Mcdreamy Pavlova are available (RM 16 – 24).

14. Juicyfy Juice Bar
Head over to Juicyfy for some detox, for it’s a purveyor of fine juices. Try the signature recipes which contain 3-4 fruits (RM 10 – 13), or simpler juices that contain 1 – 2 fruits (RM 9 – 10). No prizes for guessing the functionality of the juices right because with names like Slimify, Digestify, Beautify and Hydratify, they are self-explanatory. Simple meals like pastas and sandwiches are available. Juicyfy also has the most value for money lunch sets in town during week days, such as the one shown above, the mushroom aglio olio + lemon tea at RM 11.

In a cozy and warm ambiance, Lafayette’s menu leans towards the Italian classics such as chicken chops, rissotos and sandwiches; well executed and you can count on it. Oliva Fried Rice (RM 20.90) is like the rice version of aglio olio, toothsome with olives, chili flakes and garlic, topped with crispy fried chicken. The Rose Café Latte (RM 11) is an intriguing one, surprisingly not awkward with a hint of rose flavor. The lunch promotion is quite worth it with selected dishes at RM 12- RM15.
Address : 75M, Jalan SS 21 / 1A, Damansara Utama.
16. Le Petite Cafe
The cafe sports a minimalistic and comfortable ambiance. Food is basic and simple, serving items like western meals, pastas, waffles, snacks and cakes (RM 4 – 30). The Waffle Chicken Burger (RM 15) is average, but enough to fill your stomach.

17. Mace by Coffee Chemistry
Mace by Coffee Chenistry is the place to go if you are looking for coffee cuteness overload. As one of the very first cafes with 3D coffee (RM 16.5 – RM 32), foamy teddy bears soaking in green tea latte is not an unusual sight. Loaded with plenty of crunchy prawns, the Garlic Ocean Prawn Pasta (RM 26) is aptly charred, and slightly Malaysianized with a dash of curry powder.

18. MG’s Vegetarian Cafe
The cafe offers simple items such as various types of donburi (RM9.43 – 10.07), rice dishes (RM11.55 – 16.86), salads (RM6.25 – RM18.97), Pasta and Western Meals (RM 6.25 – 31.70). I would recommend the Mushroom Burger (RM 18.95), which consists of a juicy, meaty mushroom patty that provides the same satisfying sensation that you would get from eating a chicken burger. The Golden Cheese Vegetarian Steak (RM13.90) is fried till crisp, and paired with a refreshing passion fruit sauce.

19. Miru Dessert Café
With the portions served at Miru Dessert Café, people should probably start eating desserts as mains because the portions are simply gigantic. Equivalent to 4-5 slices of Massimo bread and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, the Honey Toasts (RM 16 – RM 18) are cubed ,buttered within, and comes in a variety of flavors such as matcha, chocolate strawberry, cheddar cheese and smores. Other items available include Froyo Shake (RM 16 – 18), coffee (RM 8 – RM 17) and tea (RM 8- RM 12).

20. Nara Kitchen and Co
After the success of The Good Batch, the same team ventured into Nara Kitchen & Co, continuing to create whimsical food. The interior is white, white and white only. People that are addicted to white would love this place, but some might find it too plain. I would like to think of it as let the food do the talking. The Pink Lobster Pasta (RM 59) is adorned with edible flowers, consisting of fresh lobster and salmon-still-pink-at-the-center, smothered with creamy cheddar sauce. The Watermelon Feta Crumble (RM 25) is a delightful combo with star fruit, watermelon, walnuts, feta cheese and a drizzle of vinaigrette.

21. Petto Cafe
The pastel-blue cafe has ample space for your pets to run around. One thoughtful thing provided by the cafe is pampers for your furkid incase they are not potty trained – it’ll save you the hassle of stopping in the middle of your meal to clean up after your furkid ! Food served here is typical cafe food – Fish & Chips, Chicken Chop, Spaghetti, etc (RM 11 – RM 20); nothing unusual. The good thing is, your fur kid also get their own meals here, such as Egg Pasta, Chicken Liver + Vege, Lam + Vege, etc (RM 8 – RM20). (Too bad no furkids for me to play with when I was there 🙁

22. Philtre Coffee
Philtre Coffee’s ambiance reminisces old kampung houses with the use of wooden planks as its main material for interior design. Despite that, it’s not at all old-fashioned, but instead, it’s elegantly chic with the upcycling of old doors and iron frames. I like the coffee here, alluringly aromatic and easy to drink. Spaghetti and sandwiches are served on weekdays, while there is an addition of nasi kerabu and ayam percit on weekends.

If you are looking for a place to sit down for a piece of sinful cake, look no further because Rekindle would be your best bet. Just look at how much cakes they have on the shelves ! When I took my first bite of the tiramisu kahlua (RM 16), there was an explosion of flavors and textures – the alcoholic kahlua, the smooth mascarpone and the coffee-moistened sponge cake. Rekindle would definitely be the cake place to go to. On the downside, if you are looking for mains, it has only two kinds of sandwiches to offer.
Address: 4 Jalan SS21/35, Damansara Utama
Go coconuts at Sankaya because there’s a triple dose of coconuts in its ice cream – coconut ice cream, coconut flesh and the ice cream itself is contained in half a coconut shell. Choose 2 scoops of ice cream plus two toppings (RM ) or three scoop of ice cream plus three toppings at RM 9.90.
Address: 80, Jalan SS 21/39, Damansra Utama.
25. Soft Serve
Among so many ice cream parlours in Damansara Uptown, I think Soft Serve has the best balance between creativity in ingredients, value-for-money and portion. The After Dinner (RM17) has plenty of elements to brighten up the day with chocolate brownies, frozen cherries, creme caramel ice cream, jelly, and a syringe of caramel sauce to adjust your desired amount of sweetness. The Honey Matcha Softserve (RM 16) is a nice collaborative work with Royce Chocolate, topped with Royce Baton cookies/chocolates, Azuki red beans, shiritana dango and a small cup of smoky liquid (I’m sorry I don’t know what that is!) Too bad the Honey Matcha is only available for a limited amount of time. Simpler flavors with simple toppings are available too (RM 9-12), such as “Fluff” (cotton candy with himalayan rock salt on milk soft serve) and “Churros” (churros on chocolate soft serve)

26. Tea & Tattle
So I am cheating a little bit here because I haven’t been to the one in Damansara Uptown, I am writing from my experience of visiting Tea & Tattle’s first branch in Ipoh. Tea drinking has never been so sophisticated, when dainty little timer is provided to time how long your tea should be brewed. The Guayusa Tea is full of herbs that reminds me of Chinese herbal tea “pak chu cao” ,most commonly found in kopitiams but a lighter version. 7 minutes is required for this tea. The Gumbo Stew looks like it’s still on the menu; a soupy stew with refreshing sweetness of celery, onion and thyme.

27. Tea Press Japanese Roasters
Tea Press imports their own tea from Shizuoka, Japan. Extra step is taken by using water cooked in an iron pot to soften the water qualities for a better cup of tea. Food at the moment is basic, but nonetheless replicates the elegance and the delicate flavors of Japan. The home made biscuits are surprisingly good, considering that they look more like dried tofu then biscuits (RM 7). But don’t judge a biscuit by its cover because the crunchy biscuits infused with caramel are simply so addictive.

28. The Culture Pot
Expect a mix of cuisines as the cafe name suggests. A mix of cuisines; a mix of cultures. Don’t be surprised to see briyani, pastas, vegetarian adobo and turkey panini on the same page of the menu. The Chicken Adobo Wrap (RM 10.90) is pleasant though too salty for me; while the Soba Salad (RM 8) is comforting and refreshing. Nothing fancy here but everything is super affordable with nothing over RM 14.90.

29. The Good Batch
Serving whimsical creations, The Good Batch indeed serves a bunch of good food. The menu is extensive, from appetizers (RM 17 – RM 19), to snacks (RM 14 to RM 19), to all day mains (RM 23 – RM 29) and a dinner menu from 6 pm onwards (RM 29 – 52). We tried the “The Good Stuff” (RM 25); a pyramid of fluffy French brioche, sandwiching mango slices and shaved coconut, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. This dessert-material is amusingly listed under “mains”, but hey, there’s nothing wrong with having ice cream for breakfast or lunch.

The 155 years old Tsujiri brand hails from Kyoto, Japan, and it’s a purveyor of fine green tea; any kind of green tea pretty much. There’s O-Matcha Cappuccino, O-Matcha Chocolate Latte, O-Matcha Shaved Ice and O-Matcha Soft Ice Cream. The one in the image is the O-Matcha Parfait. Another prominent flavor in Tsujiri would be the Houjicha (roasted tea). Whatever you can find the O-Matcha in, you’ll find Houjicha there too. I was keen to try the Houjicha Parfait as it seemed to be interesting, but too bad the machine was broken when I was there. Items here range from RM 8 to RM 16.50.
Address: 58, Jalan SS 21/58, Damansara Utama.
31. Villa Ju Bakery Cafe
The cafe welcomes you with an alluring scent of freshly baked pastires. The cafe serves decent brunches and pastas (RM 17.90 – 19.90). Being a Korean Cafe, of course you will see bingsu here. The ice flakes here have a milky flavor topped with other ingredients such as mango, blueberry and oreos. A little something different about the bingsus here is that they come in three sizes – friends size, family size and party size. The party size bingsu costs RM 59.90 – RM 75.90, can you imagine how big that is ?

32. Wesley’s Wild Honey Cafe
Wesley’s is a specialist in wild honey – to be exact, Tualang Honey that’s harvested from tualang trees from the rainforests of Malaysia. It tastes very different from the typical honey that we are used to. It’s much darker in color, has a slightly fermented flavor, tastes a bit like dried longan, and pleasantly sweet (as opposed to some others which can be sickening sweet). Almost everything you eat or drink here come with wild honey (fruit juices & teas @ RM9.80 – RM23.80, toasts & waffles RM10.80 – RM18.80). We really liked the Signature Waffle because the addition of wild honey immediately makes the waffles become much more exquisite. If you happen to catch the boss (?) around, he is quite willing to answer your questions – such as how to differentiate real and fake honey. Real honey makes bubbles when you mix it in water; and it doesn’t freeze when you put it in the freezer.

With the founders of Wondermilk from an interior design background, Wondermilk looks like it’s about to start a party any time. Cup cakes are aplenty at Wondermilk (RM 4.50 each, get a discount for 4 and above). With flavors such as “foxy red velvet”, “oh my choc”, “cookies cream dream” and more, it’s enough for you to eeni meeni mini moe for a while. Despite the limited food choices of basic snacks, burgers and pastas (RM 9.90 – RM 19.90), the chicken burger is pretty good (RM 19.90) – aptly charred with a slice of pineapple for a bit of zing.
Address: 41, Jalan 21/1s, Damansara Utama.
