Many of us can’t live without our smart phones and apps these days. You open the phone, there’s WhatsApp for communication, there’s Waze to get you to where you want, then there’s the Open Rice App to get you to what you want to eat [Do read further to see details of 3 x RM 100 Aeon Voucher Giveaway at the end of the post].
If you are not using the Open Rice App already, it’s a popular app in Malaysia that helps you to search for good food around you. When you open the app, if your phone’s Location / GPS is on, it automatically detects what foods are available nearby you. You may also filter what you want to eat via locations, cuisines, restaurant type and more.
If you don’t know what to eat, or simply don’t want to search on the app, just look at the Editor’s Picks for recommendations. Other features of the app include finding good deals as Open Rice partners with restaurateurs to bring promotions to you (very important now with everything on the rise !). An example of a promotion at the moment would be the Buy 1 Free 1 Kirin Beer promotion at Rocku Yakiniku in Pavilion. Just show the staff the coupon from the app, and you are entitled for the promotion. There’s no need to print out anything and no trees are harmed in the process.
Once you’ve decided on what you want to eat, you can even create an event by using the “Meal Invite” feature, which is really genius because once you’ve clicked on it, you choose you date, time, and you can invite your friends in your phone’s contact list through Whatsapp / Line / Wechat, etc.
Furthermore, did you know that the Open Rice App is equally useful if you are travelling to other countries such as Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Thailand and Singapore ? The next time that you go to any of these countries, travel with the Open Rice App and make your travel worthwhile because food is an essential part of travel as well.
Take Macau for example, get ready for a journey of gastronomic adventure. Some say that Cantonese cuisine in Macau is even more refined than Hong Kong because it’s not as commercialised as Hong Kong. With its Portuguese colonisation history, Macanese cuisine is a unique combination of Chinese and Portuguese cuisine, while good old Portuguese cuisine is also common in Macau.
If I get to go Macau again, Portuguese cuisine would be something that I would love to have again. Simply “Filter” or “Sort By” cuisine, and hundreds of Portuguese restaurants would be right in front of you.
If you wish to narrow down your selection, you may filter further by choosing a location. In my case, I’ve chosen the Taipa District. After a few minutes of scrolling through, I found Antonio Restaurant that’s so my type of restaurant that I would go to.
From the photos in the Open Rice App, food looks perfect and the ambiance is definitely there. Antonio Restaurant, I hope I get to see you sometime in the near future ! **Food images shown are taken by Open Rice user Ophelia 710, Zukibb, Yuyauyuyau and Raffaella Cheung.
Take Taiwan as another example. Being a Taiwanese myself, I must admit that there are many places in Taiwan that I have not visited and am curious about, such as the Miaoli area (苗栗). The Tung Blossom Festival in Miaoli has always fascinated me but I’ve never had the chance to go. If I were to go to Miaoli, Hakka cuisine would definitely be my cuisine of choice because Miaoli is the home base of the Hakka population in Taiwan. In the Open Rice App, I have filtered by location (Hsinchu / Miaoli) and cuisine (Hakka) and voila I found 桐花村客家料理 /Tung Blossom Hakka Cuisine.
Another quick look at the photos of 桐花村客家料理 / Tung Blossom Hakka Cuisine, this is definitely another restaurant I would love to visit! 桐花村客家料理 / Tung Blossom Hakka Cuisine, I am coming for you the next time I go to Taiwan ! **Food images shown are taken by Open Rice user Mika 出走美食日記.
