The cafe scene in Ipoh is more vibrant than ever, with all sorts of new boutique cafes or hipster cafes popping out so fast that it’s hard to keep track. In the beginning of 2012, there were barely 10 cafes in Ipoh to do a Top 10 List and now at the beginning of 2014, there are more than 30 cafes to sample. The cafes never fail to amaze me with their individualistic, sometimes themed interior decoration such as Parisian, child’s play, Korean, nostalgia, vintage and heritage. Some cafes have amusingly incorporated spa, hair saloon, DIY classes, ukulele lessons, art gallery, custom bikes or politics, serving more than just coffee and cakes. As for cuisine, most of them serve western food along the lines of pasta, sandwiches and burgers with a fewer number of them serving local / Asian cuisine. My overall experience in the cafes is enjoyable with the pricing being the least charming because they tend to be pricey, even somewhat exorbitant, considering that I find some cafes still have room for improvement on their food. Nonetheless, dining experience is subjective and your opinions might differ so do use the list of 34 Cafes To Visit in Ipoh as a guide to choose your preference. The list of cafes is in 3 parts – the first section is dedicated to cafes that commenced in 2013, the second section is for Halal cafes that commenced in 2013 and the third section is for cafes that commenced in 2012 or before. The list will be a dynamic list, adding new cafes that open in 2014 and so on, so be back often to check out what’s new and cooking. **2017 update** This post was written a few years ago, you should double check if the cafe is still in business before going to avoid disappointment.

1. Ben & Lynette Maison Patisserie (next to Secret Garden)
A little tucked away in the back lanes, Ben & Lynette Maison Patisserie is set in a colonial mansion serving pasta, pizzas, desserts and with a pick-your-own salad bar, you can easily customize salads and sandwiches to your liking. Signature dishes include Sandwich Train and Charcoal Burger, big enough for 2-3 people to share.

2. Bougainvillea City Cafe on Jalan Lau Ek Cheng (Opposite Bricks & Barrels)
Rarely, you get the chef behind the scene to come and explain to you about food on his menu, but that’s what Chef Mac does when he is not too busy in the kitchen. Trained at Le Cordon Bleu, his food screams passion and creativity, using seasonal items, turning simple to gourmet.

3. Coffee At 91 in Tambun Inn Hotel
Coffee @ 91 has a Korean flair to it with its dreamy colors and k pop music in the background. Absolutely be there if you are the greedy type that want to eat every dessert you see because you can do just that at Coffee @ 91 as the desserts come miniature sized with the price about half of other cafes too. Do take note though if you are hungry and need a good meal, the cafe only serves two very light meals of mushroom soup and Korean Kimchi Shin Ramen.

4. Espresso Lab @ Ipoh Garden
Liquored cakes are Espresso Lab‘s specialty. The evocative combination of whisky, caramel and chocolate cake is to die for I think I could lick the plate clean if nobody is watching. I tried the kahlua tiramisu on another occasion and it was just as enchanting with crunchy caramalized almonds adorned atop. The food though is not as spectacular.

5. Happy 8 Retreat Cafe in Happy 8 Retreat Hotel @ Ipoh Old Town
Designed with retreat and nature in mind, the earth toned cafe has many wood and forest elements. If cafes exist in magical kingdoms, they would look like the Happy 8 Retreat Cafe. The main courses on the menu consist of a good mix of local and western food at typical cafe pricing though the desserts are pricey, sometimes even costing more than the main course.

6. JJ Cafe on Jalan Kampar
Vibrant clashing colors and mismatched corners have merged unusually well to give you the lively JJ Cafe. The cafe probably has the most unique chairs in town where the chairs come in velvet fabric, dalmatian dots and leopard prints. The food is decent though I thought some fine tuning could improve the food. The walnut mille crepe was a delightful dessert.

7. Missing Marbles @ Ipoh Old Town
People not in the know might pass Missing Marbles thinking it’s an optical shop because the original facade and yellow signboard still remains. With child’s play in theme, going to Missing Marbles could be taking a trip down memory lane, reigniting your memories of childhood toys like marbles, bicycles and origami fortune tellers, while enjoying noodle or rice meals at the same time.

8. Myth Eatery and Bar in M Boutique Hotel
A not so mythical Myth Cafe that needs to be experienced with M Boutique Hotel, or at least the lobby of M Boutique Hotel. The hotel’s lobby depicts a safari expedition base camp, and the Myth Cafe could very well belong to the wealthy Safarian sponsoring the expedition, welcoming you into his rustic house with white-washed table mats already laid out, ready for a feast. The pricing is much more premium than the average cafes.

9. Patisserie Boutique Cafe @ Ipoh Old Town
A Parisian cafe that might just make you think you have stepped into a cafe in Paris for a moment with its simplistic and elegant charm. The chicken lasagna was a gorgeous dish with brilliant colors of tomato red, cream-white and salmon pink.

10. Pronto Daily Cafe @ Ipoh Old Town
A down to earth cafe that’s not too fancy but more soothing with its nature inspired interior decor. Besides the typical cafe menu of sandwiches and pastas, the cafe becomes a fine dining restaurant at night, serving gourmet items like lobster, foie gras and Angus beef.

11. Roquette Cafe @ Ipoh Old Town
Assemblyman YB Nga Kor Ming and local coffee maker Check Hup team up to bring you a somewhat peculiar yet harmonious combination of a DAP service cafe – where constituents can discuss matters with YB Nga every Tuesday and at the same time enjoy a cup of coffee. The paper drip coffee was captivating with a sweet after taste while the food was not too impressive.

12. STG (Sabah Tea Garden) Tea House Cafe @ Taman Chateau
With the opening of STG Tea House Cafe, we get to enjoy organic and pesticide-free tea which hails from the highlands of Sabah in a pristine white mansion. I enjoyed the lamb but thought the chicken was a tad dry and did not have the “smoky” flavor as it is supposed to be “Tea Smoke Chicken Whole Leg”. The price is relatively high for the small portion served but the enchanting atmosphere did make up for the imperfections.

13. The Sands Bistro & Cafe @ Kinta Riverfront
Situated along the Kinta river bank, the Sands Bistro & Cafe is a dazzling place with gem- studded neon tress to have dinner or a drink. The menu caters to please the public with everything under one roof – barbecue, Italian, steamboat, western and Taiwanese. There were some negative comments about the food on another blog, hopefully they have buckled up by now – but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the romantic scenery with a drink.

14. Something’s Brewing @ Medan Ipoh Bistari
While most cafes emphasize on coffee, Something’s Brewing has a stellar range of gourmet teas where the tea concoction is made from an assortment of organic spices, flowers and teas. Take my chocolate chai for example, it has pu-erh tea, cocoa nibs, coconut flakes, roasted dandelion roots, long pepper, yerba mate and vanilla bean. The owner is looking to increase the already comprehensive tea selections from 20 to 40 items so you will be spoiled for choice when that happens.

15. Stan & Brew Roast Coffee – in Soho Complex next to Sam Tet School
With the proliferation of cafes in Ipoh, it is becoming harder and harder for cafes to come up with unique desserts when tiramisu, macarons, cheese cakes, chocolate cakes are all over the place. The plant cake at Stan & Brew Roast Coffee was something that caught my attention and it was fun digging through the “soil” (chocolate cookie crumbs) to find out what was underneath. The lamb was scrumptious and reasonably priced.

16. Vanity Haus Boutique Cafe & Spa Salon @ Canning Garden
The European-inspired Vanity Haus Cafe functions as both cafe and spa salon, occupying a bungalow house that was previously a hair salon. Some mirrors from the hair salon were kept and used as part of interior decoration, echoing the past and present connection with “vanity”. The food is homey, with the heavenly marshmallow brownie being my favorite that has completely won me over.

17. 42 Foodies @ Fairpark
42 Foodies is a warm & cozy Italian Restaurant with a not-very-Italian interior decor. The overall atmosphere is cafe-ish and artsy with the tree mural, chalk-board menu, so I have included this restaurant in this list. All the dishes were well executed except the chicken chowder that was less memorable for me.

Section 2 – Halal Cafes that Commenced in 2013.
I like this first-floor cafe with its huge windows, where light or darkness fills the room at ease, giving the cafe a different atmosphere depending on the time you are at the cafe. The scenery varies too, where you get to observe Ipoh through the windows, whether it’s the roaring Ipoh by day when many lorries rumble the earth underneath during rush hour, or placid Ipoh by night. The food is not bad in general.

An artsy funky cafe with event venue / art gallery combined all in one. An amusing and engaging space although it was a bit musty and smoky. The cafe is supposed to serve light items like maggie mee, burgers and drinks but only drinks were available when I visited the cafe. Maybe they cater more to weekends or when there are events.

3. Old Town White Coffee Signature in M Boutique Hotel
Old Town White Coffee with its signature branch, has just become more plush under the candle-like chandeliers, with a touch of colonial and heritage elements. The food is similar to the standard branches but it is made more wholesome with additional items such as vegetables and fishcakes, and presentation is definitely taken into account.

4. Ooi & Comrades (near Ipoh Airport)
Another multitasking cafe with hair saloon, thrift shop and custom bikes all under one roof. Located in a bungalow with huge graffitied scissors on the walls, I thought there is a crazy Edward Scissorhands living inside, getting ready to play some hair. The cafe has one of the most affordable pricing with everything under RM 6. Light meals such as maggie mee and sandwiches are served.

5. Plan B @ Old Town Ipoh
Transformed from an old furniture warehouse, Plan B is modern in a raw way – with the washed-out bricks and visible ceiling beams & ducts. It’s aligned with the that “old-town” feel with a contemporary twist. When it first opened, I only had velvet cake and juice which I enjoyed but others were not so lucky, receiving burnt or cold food, calling it overrated. I visited Plan B again few months later with a party of 7; all of us had no complaints about the food except that the service could have been more attentive. I still think it’s a good place to go, especially when you prefer somewhere airy, spacious and uncluttered.

6. Thumb’s Cafe @ Greentown
Looking very similar to a Malay kampung house, Thumb’s cafe serves a mix of Malay and Western cuisine. Old fashioned with yellow wooden windows, vintage floral curtains and cushy couches, it’s the kind of place you would expect some comfort food. The food is decent and very affordable, but I am under the impression that food is already prepared before you place the order as the food arrived our table lukewarm.

Section 3- Cafes that Commenced in 2012 or Before
1. Sin Yoon Loong @ Ipoh Old Town
Till now, all the cafes have been listed in alphabetical order except for Sin Yoon Loong. If we are talking about cafes that opened in or before 2012, it’s not possible to not mention Sin Yoon Loong “kedai kopi” at the top of the list, which was established in 1937 – who is the granddaddy of them all. There must be a secret recipe in the white coffee that just keeps luring me and patrons alike to keep going back for the same cup of familiar taste. The cafe serves simple items such as toast and pastries. Yong Tau Foo, pork rice, etc can be ordered from hawker stalls stationed in Sin Yoon Loong and also from the cafe next door, Sin Yoon Fong.

2. Burps & Giggles @ Ipoh Old Town
Burps & Giggles is another cafe that deserves to cut the queue in the alphabetical list. If Sin Yoon Loong is the granddaddy of them all, then Burps & Giggles would be the father of them all because ever since B&G opened the whimsical outlet with quirky murals, old tattered charm; more cafes followed path, generating an unstoppable tornado of cafe culture in Ipoh.

3. Allegra @ Ipoh Specialist Hospital
Allegra belongs to the Burps & Giggles group of cafes, which first opened in Meru Valley Golf Club in Jelapang in 2012 and shifted to Ipoh Specialist Hospital in 2013. Hospitals aren’t exactly a first choice when it comes to choosing a location for a cafe, but like what Burps & Giggle had done to old town Ipoh, revitalizing the place and attracting more youngsters, Allegra too is enlivening hospital food which is most of the time associated with boring and tasteless. I actually haven’t been to Allegra at all as I guess the notion of going to a hospital to enjoy some good food is still daunting, but I think I will get pass that one day and go to the hospital and try their pastries.

4. Bread, Espresso & Dessert Cafe (BED) in Bandar Ipoh Raya
With a naughty name of BED, which stands for Bread Espresso Dessert, the cafe bakes their pastries fresh out of the oven. The cafe is cozy with pastries available for take away, and some are used in their sandwiches. The smoked duck breast in carrot bun was delightful with a glistening bread-top and plump duck pieces.

5. Buku Tiga Lima @ Ipoh Old Town
The shabby in chic Buku Tiga Lima serves both savory and sweet pancakes which come steaming hot; and with the bagels resembling bagel burgers, they have something a little different to other cafes in Ipoh. The little notebooks with triple 5’s set the cafe’s aura of the yesteryear with ingenious lamps and antique items.

6. Jose & Deli Eatery in French Hotel
Jose & Deli Eatery is located on the 1st floor of French Hotel so getting to the cafe is like an adventure, where you start at the elegant staircase with chandeliers made of green wine bottles on the ceiling, then eventually making your way up to the cafe, discovering the american-ish mixed light-industrial themed cafe. Some of the food I liked, some I didn’t, but the atmosphere was definitely superb.

7. Josephine Cafe @ Ipoh Garden South
I visited the cafe once 2 years ago and the only thing I could remember about the cafe was the awful servitude. Needless to say, I did not go back there again with so many choices of cafe now but the cafe is still standing today so maybe there is something nice about it which I was not fated to discover.

In clashing colors of red and white, Lim Kopi is a fashionable “kopitiam” that’s hard to miss on Hugh Low Street. The cafe has a fun name – Lim Kopi (啉咖啡), where the pronunciation of “Lim ” (林) refers to the surname of the owner, at the same time the written word of “Lim”(啉) refers to the action of drinking. Lim Kopi’s menu consists of local food such as curry noodles, wantan noodles, yong tau fu, paos and traditional desserts.

9. Purple Cane Tea House on Osbourne Street (same building as the old Foh San Dim Sum)
Located in a unseeming building, Purple Cane Tea House is a marvelous place to dine with natural light shining through glass covered sky well. Since it’s a tea house, tea is an important ingredient in all their dishes, making their meals super healthy. The lunch sets vary daily and I just can’t get enough of the “tea soup” that is cooked in a tea-pot, and drank out of a tea-cup.

10. Ray of Hope Cafe @ Bercham
The exceptionally clean Ray of Hope Cafe in Bercham is a community charity program to provide employment to those with learning disabilities. The staffs in the cafe are not as speedy, but they are the most dedicated bunch of staff I’ve seen; fully focused, doing one thing at a time with full concentration. The food turned out to be amazing unexpectedly and I would definitely return not just for the food, but for the cause too.

11. Zakka Loft @ Medan Ipoh Bistari
Zakka Loft serves traditional Hakka set meals and a variety of cakes with the rainbow cake being their signature, a cheerful cake that has a different flavor in every layer. Zakka Loft started off as a cafe cum venue for DIY classes. The first phase is the “zakka” phase where the cafe is adorned with soft toys, bags, all made from basic materials like socks and cloths. When the cafe expanded, the second phase was more “cosmic” that encourages interaction among friends and it’s one of the rarer cafes that has no wifi.

Please tell me this list is not sorted by ranking, because places like happy 8 is deemed unworthy. Look ambiance these days are highly demanding. However, having basic food necessities comes first as a cafe. The food and beverages are sub-par at best, the ambiance is the only selling point which in my opinion is just like any other old town look that everyone is trying to go for these days (seriously look through the list, there are at least 7 cafes that uses that old town hipster motif) and here is the cream on the cake, ITS REALLY REALLY PRICEY. My friends and I ordered a latte and it was more expensive than the Budweiser I ordered which was around Rm17 PER CAN! (Can you imagine Rm20 for a cup of latte that is really really bad [No offence but it’s the truth]) I’m not trying to be a hater, I give that this list is comprehensive but more research needs to be done but still a good job nonetheless. What we need to know are places that are VALUE FOR MONEY at the BEST TASTE. Don’t be fooled by simple ambiance and forget about the main point, ENJOYING ALL THAT WE ARE PAYING FOR. And again, no offence and not being hater here, just stating the truth.

Hi Richard. Thanks for your true and honest opinion! The list is an alphabetical list for easy reference. I agree with you on the price and food, which is why I’ve also stated in the beginning of the post that I find the food still has room for improvement and the price is not just pricey, but exorbitant for some. If you want value for money, best taste, nice ambiance, half of the cafes won’t make it to this list because the majority of them ARE pricey. The list just acts as a guide to choose your preference because some might just want ambiance and don’t need the food to be extremely good. Besides, Ipoh has a lot of places with nice food, good price, but not much ambiance, so I think the new cafes do add a different genre of food to Ipoh. Cheers.
No worries KJ, just passing comments from one foodie to the next. Go out and find out more places, the list shouldn’t end here right? Actually going towards a more local taste, there is this hawker place at ipoh garden south called Coffee Boy that I have a surprising fondness for their kopi-o, weird since I’m an espresso drinker. Environment is like your typical hawker centre however food galore, great coffee and kinda neat and tidy place. Go and have a try. You shan’t regret it.
The list doesn’t end here, it’s going to be continuously growing as I keep adding new cafes, or old cafes recommended by readers. You know, I gotta start somewhere ! 34 sounds like a nice number – so the list started out with 34. I recall Coffee Boy, corner lot I think.. Will give it a go!

A good site and please do update. One of my personal favourites not listed here, is Nadia’s Sugar & Spice opposite Jusco near Ipoh Garden South. Excellent food, ambience and mood. Do try it out and please do include in this list. Started last year and is halal, serves both Western and Malay cuisine.

excellent list. ipoh is very up and coming and gaining a respectful collection of cafes and resturants. all very unique in style of food offering. I wish I could spend more time in Ipoh. Being born there but having emigrated to the UK, chances of spending more than a day or so is slim. After seeing this list, I’m more than eager to spend more time with relatives. Thanks.

Agreed with Richard WWL, same thought that I would like to share but for me especially Zakka Loft where the service is so poor, especially the attitude of the staff was poorer then a hawker stall. Hope at least the serve from the staff was more polite which i believe POLITE Doesn’t COST U A Damm CENTS. Even as like B&L although their charge where way higher from the value of their food and drinks but at least their staff serve a little well ( a little consolation). no offence and not being hater here, just stating the truth.

Yah totally agreed with u that I won’t return again if I face this kind of service. perhaps the knew you will put their name on your blog that why they started to treat you a little special. But for me I think you should better observe more 1st before u put into your blog so that your reputation will always up to standard ( at least ). By the way, I’m not said all of the it having problem, but most of it yah i believe so they face the similar problem.
Actually, almost none of them know I am blogging about them, except maybe for the boss of Ooi & Comrades, because he said not many Chinese folks visit his place so he paid extra attention; boss from Something’s Brewing – because I was obviously fascinated with their teas, pouring the tea leaves out trying to see what’s inside and he shared his stash of tea leaves with me; and I was getting curious looks from the staffs in Stan & Brew because I was the only customer at that time, and very noticeable with a DLSR and playing with food for too long… Readers have recommended a few more, places so I will go and explore more:)

Section 2 – Plan B and Old Town Whit Coffee Signature I asked them verbally. The other 4 cafes are operated by Muslim folks so they should be halal.
KJ, try “I Love Cafe” along Jalan Tasik (behind Peking Pan Mee, same row as Brothers, PC Depot). Signature “Penang Coffee” and some light pork-free food like nasi lemak and teochew porridge. Nasi lemak special came with dry-fried chicken drumstick not so tasty. Not sure Halal-certified.

Sun Yun Loong has a branch behind Jalan Bendahara (not sure what Jalan). Just as popular with signature coffee. “Teh see” (tea with evaporated milk) also very good. One stall serves Teluk Intan chee cheong fun.
oh ok! I remember seeing another sun yun loong somewhere and I wasn’t sure if it’s the same sun yun loong in old town.

Tammy’s Kitchen, in my opinion, serves food that beats most of the listed cafes/eateries hands down. On the other hand, I’m extremely surprised that places like Josephine cafe made the list! The last time I visited, me & my friend had the ‘high-tea set’, which was supposed to include sandwiches with goose liver (foie gras). As unlikely as that is, it was advertised as such on their menu. When we received our food though, we got sandwiches with cold unagi (eel) pieces. Imagine the horror! When we questioned the waitress about it, she told us to speak with the owner, who just politely smiled it off and acted as if it wasn’t anything worth bothering her! Since then I’ve never been there again, and am still rather puzzled as to how it’s managed to survive up till now.
HI JW. I haven’t tried Tammy’s Kitchen, will give that a try when I have a chance. Josephine’s Cafe is in the list, but in a negative way. It got in the list because it’s still standing – so I thought maybe there is something good I missed out.

You have miss out harold’s bread opposite plan b. Serving the one of the cheapest sandwiches around town. Great range of pastries. Reasonable coffee at reasonable price. Love the place last I was there but love your list of outlets

I’ve been an Ipohan for 42 years before migrated here Western Australia 9 years ago. I prefer the traditional Hawker style Kedai Kopi . So what I see is other then Sun Yoong Loong , most Featured are More to the Westernised kind of Food. This Blog is about Ipoh and Ipoh had some of the best Hawker Foods in Malaysia. Where is the Kai Si Hor Fun or Ngah Choy Kai for example. I can even name at least over 10 outlets serving some real good traditional Ipoh Food of which are Cheaper and Better then what was Featured.
Hi Thomas. Ipoh sure is food heaven for cheap and good food with many hawker kedai kopi. But as you’ve said it, they are towards “hawker food” instead of “cafes”, so the genre of food would fall under a different category. When I use the word “Cafe”, I am referring to it in more of a Western context, similar to the kind which Australia has plenty of 🙂

What.. I was born in Ipoh but migrated when I was still young, ashamed to say I’ve never been to this part of Ipoh before :'( it’s an yearly affair to make a trip back to the hometown in chenderiang (not sure if it’s far from these fancy cafes) and in fact I just got back from there last week. Bookmarked this page the moment I happened to see it on fb and will definitely try to make my next trip more interesting!!! Just hope the cafes listed here aren’t really far from where I stay because it’ll be tough. Thanks a lot for the recommendations!

In terms of ambience, these restaurants are good.. however I’ve bad experience at BEN & LYNETTE MAISON PATISSERIE!! The food and the services are BAD!! The price is not reasonable yet Customers hv to play the role as waiter, and serve everything by themselves: place order by themselves at the cashier and pay (only cash) before eat , take the cutlery n sauces by your own!! Wat The..!! No next time for me!!

Had an earlier part of my live studying & living in Ipoh…Last went back to Ipoh was in 2013…Some I’ve tried, like STG Tea House…the food is okay, ambiance is great but it’s really pricey…It’s just like Indulgence, so went once & I won’t go again…Don’t know about other Muslim though but for me, as long as the eatery serves halal certified & slaughtered chicken…it’s fine…so thanks for your informative suggestions…All the more reason I should go back to Ipoh often :-)…

There is two new places open which the Steak House American Funky in Menglembu 1st curve and Balsamic Restaurant and Bistro in Old town infront of standard chartered bank , both owns one single chef which is trained in France and 5 star hotels in Asia and Europe , maybe can have a review of this two restaurant

Hi JW – there are a few ranges – The ones with really nice interior are usually the pricey ones, which can can up to RM 40 or more or so. Most of them are probably around RM 25-30 for one main course and a drink, while lesser number of them are less than RM20.
Bookmarking your lovely list. I’ve only been to Ipoh once and the hawker food really impressed. Something about the town just makes it better. A lot of people say it’s the limestone infused water source.
I did not stay long enough to experience the cafe culture but this post is a fantastic guide. Love it! Thanks for sharing.

Disapointed over “something brewing” cafe, it is over-price. Rather spend the money on starbucks or coffee beans. Lousy ambience, not worth trying.

Ben n lynette in ipoh parade served bad coffee!! Seriously, the green tea latte that i ordered taste bad. No green tea nor latte..jus taste milk. The staff does not take seriously my complaint so i spaid n walk out…hwever in less than ten seconds while i googling saw a pic that food blogger share are same with my drink. And her green tea latte is green color. Annd. Mine is white color!!!!

That’s the trouble with most service establishments — the bosses are not around or they can’t serve the customers themselves (they only have money to set up a me-too business without actually knowing the business). Furthermore when the cat is away the rats will play. That is the beginning of the end for such establishments especially in this age of the internet.

I’ve been to Stan & Brew Roast Coffee, I have to say, the service there was really disappointing. I like Patisserie Boutique Cafe, especially the Creme Brulee. STG is a huge disappointment, I don’t even understand why the heck my friends always hold gathering there, it’s not like we earn our own money or something, just too costly with so-so quality food and not-that-good service. And I recommend Scenic Cafe, it’s near Pantai Hospital and Tambun Inn. I discovered it about three months ago, and I’ve been there for three times (I’m not the type who likes to eat at a cafe, so yeah, I really like the place). What’s good about Scenic Cafe is that it’s closed only on Wednesdays and it’s opened until 10pm or 11pm something, don’t quite recall. I’ve had Nasi Kerabu with Ayam Percik, I know it sounds weird to have that in a cafe, but trust me, it’s good. Costs RM22, but it’s enough to keep me full until 9am the next morning (I ate it with my female friend). The service is good, maybe it’s because the manager is there every time I visit. One thing that makes me visit this place over and over again is the cakes. I prefer my desserts less sweet, and I really love the cakes served in this cafe, just the right amount of sugar. The coffee is not that impressive, though.

Scenic Cafe is nice – atmospheric, run on a bigger scale so it’s more systematic in terms of service. some food I liked, some soso. Great list, thanks! There are so many cafes in Ipoh now, with new ones keep popping up, it is hard to keep track. It’s awesome to see Ipoh now has a variety of places to choose from, although still quite hard to get a halal one. But I don’t think Ipoh is suitable yet for expensive cafes. I mean if a cup of coffee cost RM20 but has mediocre taste and mediocre service, I rather go to Starbucks instead! Do keep updating the list 🙂
Hi Adrianna. You get a few halal ones, like all the ones in section 2. Coffee at RM 20 is definitely way to much, but I have seen desserts at MORE than RM 20 per piece — crazy right?
thumb’s cafe really is horrible.
ordered the famous meatballs. theres a strong flavour of liver in all of it! and its tough too. not recommended to anyone!

Very good list but most ( if not all ) are very expensive and quality of food is not consistent. Some days good – some days bad ( maybe the cook is on his off day). Some have poor service, with waiters not knowing how to explain what food is on the menu or their specialities.
But anyway keep the list growing and wish all cafes good luck!
Yes – I agree with you about 70 % of them are quite pricey. I will be updating this list in 2015 so I will add in a few old timers’ cafes that are not so expensive. Services and food can vary too – usually still have room for improvement when they first start. Ipoh is just not service oriented, sad to say.
