We ate at Kwan Kee steamboat restaurant (坤记) for dinner in Brinchang. Eating steamboat is one of the best things you can do in Cameron Highlands. And it is not just any steamboat, it is CHARCOAL steamboat, something that seems to be very popular in Cameron Highlands compared to the electric counterparts on lower ground. Brinchang is flooded with steamboat restaurants to choose from.
Enjoying a nice simmering steamboat in Cameron Highlands’ cool weather without getting too sweaty is a luxury.
We took the charcoal steamboat set with herbal soup base (RM20 per person), which came with an array of nutritious goodies – fish balls, pork, chicken, bean curd,
Japanese tofu, mushrooms, fish
And by the way, the vegetables are refillable !
Here is the steamboat set menu with a few different soup bases. You can choose the herbal soup base, chicken soup base, tom yam soup base and “mala” (spicy) soup base for charcoal steamboat whereas the combination soup base is the electric kind.
Kwan Kee also offer “dai chow” stir fry dishes like sweet & sour pork, sambal prawn, etc.
The overall healthy meal is rather satisfying. It is unpretentious with the vegetables being one of the best ingredients as a local produce. The soup base is a bit milder than I expected, but the flavor increases as you work your way through the meal. The prawns are mostly fresh with one prawn that’s a bit mushy but I don’t blame them as Cameron Highlands is not exactly right by the beach. The friendly boss was there overlooking the restaurant so you know, the service is always good when the boss is around! We enjoyed our meal there and will be back for more.
