Tea plantations in Cameron Highlands are spectacular sights. We visited the Sungai Palas Boh Tea Plantation, which is not the easiest to get to as you have to drive through a narrow, meandering and bumpy lane. But it’s all well worth the bumps.
Start the gallivanting by immersing yourself into this amazing multitude of crisp greens.
Then make your way up to the tea center. There’s a short climb on the steps, so ladies, no high heels please. (If you are hungry, make your way up to the tea center first for a snack :))
As you reach the viewing deck, you will be dazzled by the marvelous tea valley. Having waves of high and low greens encompass you is truly refreshing.
The restaurant cum viewing deck maximizes the view with ceiling-to-floor glasses.
Of course, tea drinking absolutely essential here. It is so comfortable sipping hot tea in the slightly chilly air.
And also a nice place to treat yourself to a bit of strawberry tart and scones after all that climb!
Now, you don’t only get to drink the tea from the place of origin, you also get to see how the tea is processed in the factory.
It all starts off with the rolling process, where the tea leaves are ground and broken, releasing its juices for fermentation.
The fermentation or oxidation process gives the tea the characteristic flavor and aroma, then dried afterwards in the dryer room.
And finally, the dried tea leaves are sorted out in the sorting room according to their grades, density and flavor.
Here is the tea grinding machine – vintage ain’t it? These are the original machines used back in the 1930’s and still holding strong ever since.
The tea plantation is also a great place to learn more about Cameron Highlands, the history, the flora & fauna,
and about how it all started with JA Russell, the plantation founder in the early days.
There’s a short video to watch too.
Last but least, check out the souvenir shop if you are a tea-lover, bring back some tea to enjoy and savor.
