Restaurant Tian Xia (天下美味園) is located in a most unlikely place, inside the Sin Onn Temple (星安廟) just across from the Jaya Juco in Balakong. Furthermore, you would have thought it’s a vegetarian restaurant since it’s inside a temple, but it’s not, it has just as many carnivorous selections as any other restaurants.
Restaurant Tian Xia is famous for their steamed tilapia. Tilapias are reared in ponds and have that innate “muddy” taste and hence are usually deep fried or cooked with heavy seasoning to cover the taste. Amazingly, the tilapia at Tian Xia is steamed only with soy sauce and no muddy taste! The tilapia is fresh, meat is tender, sweet, and steamed to the most precise timing where one minute more would give the fish a tougher texture, and one minute less you would have an undercooked fish.
The fish is always consistent; every time we go to Restaurant Tian Xia, the fish never fails to present itself at its best. Here’s the same dish again on a different occasion. (RM22, price is variable depending on the weight of the fish).
While most “dai chow” restaurants would have simple vegetable stir fry featuring a single vegetable, Tian Xia has a creative way with their vegetable combination. One combination is lotus + winged beans with minced meat. The two vegetables have beautiful cross-sectionals and with the flavourful minced meat, the dish is extremely appetizing for both the taste buds and the eyes.
Restaurant Tian Xia has excellent food and the steamed tilapia is a must. In fact, we order the steamed tilapia every time without fail !
