Roussillon is a gorgeous colorful village in Provence. Roussillon is surrounded by ochre cliffs which were once mined in the 19th century for the ochre pigmentation. The villagers made use of this gift of nature and painted the village in splendor. On the village look out point, the village presents an overall ash-pinkish hue, but as you wander through the streets, you’ll discover brilliant shades of red, orange, brown and yellow.
We parked at the base of the village and took an easy stroll up the village. Roussillon is an absolutely gorgeous town to wander through. Other than the ochre-splashed walls, all the contrasting colors on the windows of blue, green and red, all make Roussillon a fascinating village. Kind of like a fairy tale village come to life!
Every little corner is so beautiful. The spiraling streets, narrow stair cases, stone-cobbled walkways and the occasional vine leaves.
The ochre trail – or the “Sentier Des Ocres” is a must in Roussillon. The trail is a short trail easily done in 30-40 minutes and takes you through the history of Roussillon as an ochre mining town and the flamboyant colors of the cliffs .
Admission to the village is free. 2.5 Euros for adults to visit Les Sentier des Ocres.
