Blue Pools @ New Zealand

New Zealand West Coast

We stopped at the Blue Pools on our way from Fox Glacier to Wanaka via Haast Pass.    The Blue Pools are located at Mount Aspiring National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  We did a short walk into the woods going through the silver-beech woods, using a combination of well maintained path, suspension bridge and board-walks.

Eventually, the walk will lead you to Makaroa river.  Our first glimpse of the Makaroa river seemed like a normal river.

As we walked on further, the water became bluer and bluer, but still slightly muddy.

When we reached the Blue Pools, the glacial-fed water was so clear you could see every piece of rock that lies beneath the blue water.  We were lucky to see the Blue Pools in such condition as I did read reviews that mentioned the pools do get muddy at times depending on the river condition.  If you are lucky, you might be able to spot a few trouts too!

We spent about 1.5 hours doing the Blue Pools walk.  If time permits, you can actually trek further in after the Blue Pools.

Other than the blue pools along Haast Pass (also known as the Heritage Highway), there are various lookout points, landscapes, including beaches, cliffs, lakes and forests.  Some of these places have walking trails available.
