Van Gogh spent a year in Arles, where he produced some of the finest masterpieces. Before visiting France, I never realized that most of Van Gogh’s paintings were based on real things and real places – Mulberry Trees, Starry Night Over the Rhone, Sunflowers, Cafe Terrace at Night, the Langlois Bridge and so on. L’Espace Van Gogh is another example of Van Gogh’s painting subject, formerly a hospital, where he stayed for treatment after cutting off his ear.
We didn’t get to do the whole Van Gogh trail in Arles as we didn’t have enough time. But having spent a week in southern France, I can relate better to his paintings, knowing where all the lively and vibrant colors come from, having seen the splendor of Southern France with my own eyes.
