Tailor-Made-Backpackers is a well maintained hostel.  The double room with en suite bathroom we took was more like motel accommodation rather than a hostel.  At only NZD80 per night, I thought was a good steal. Our room is an individual cottage, sort of looks like the one in the picture below but of a smaller size. The picture below is the main building that houses the reception, the kitchen and the common area.

The room is clean and decent sized. Basic utilities like shampoo and towels are provided. The common area has a warm atmosphere and to my surprise, there was quite a few families staying at the hostel rather than a younger crowd that I was expecting.

The only cons about the room is that it was cold during the night. The room is equipped with a heater, but I didnt feel too much heat radiating from it and it wasn’t sufficient keep the room warm.  The receptionist was really helpful to check our heater and offered to bring an extra heater from her home for us.  But somehow, with 2 heaters, the room was still quite cold….. Perhaps the walls are not insulated?

The receptionist reminded us that we can fill up the water bottles provided in the room with hot water, put that underneath the blanket when we go to bed, and we should be warm.  She was right. The 2 hot water bottles kept us warm as if there is an electric blanket underneath. Though it was still a pain to step out of the warm blanket the next morning.

Overall I like the hostel. The receptionist is friendly and helpful, the room and the common area are well maintained, and it has a lovely garden outside. I’m sure it would be really pretty in the summer. It’s not a bad choice if you don’t mind the cold in the winter.

The garden of the hostel.

The beautiful tree at the hostel.
