Australasian Bar and Restaurant is just 2 minutes drive from Alpine Rose Motel. The building is light grey, and the interior is also an elegant greyish decor. We went in the restaurant with our windbreakers and jeans and realized that it’s a more of smart casual and almost a semi-formal type of restaurant, so we were kinda underdressed.
Gary and I ordered the sea-food chowder for starter. This rich chowder is different from the classic Boston clam chowder. It didn’t have too much potatoes; the color was cream yellow rather than cream white and it had a smokey taste that went so well with the freshly ground black pepper. With the generous amount of sea- food, it is one of the best chowders I have ever tried.
I ordered the pork chop with apple sauce and figs. Everything on the plate was great. The salad was fresh, the chips were hot, and the butterlied pork was nicely grilled and had some figs in between. What more can I ask for after a long day’s drive through Arthur’s Pass Road!
Gary ordered the .. actually, I forgot what he ordered because I didn’t take a picture of his food as I was too busy with mine. I think it was pork ribs or something of that sort. But I remembered his food was good.
The price of the dishes was reasonable. The price was between NZD 23 to NZD30+ for the dishes we ordered. We enjoyed both the food and service at the Australasian Bar and Restaurant.
